As of today, the Rainy River has opened up past Baudette and we have open water in front of River Bend Resort. In fact, there were a few boats within view as of this morning. All launches up to and just past Timber Mill in Baudette are wide open and within easy striking distance from our Walleye Inn or Resort location for that matter. It sure didn’t take long for Mother Nature to consume the ice and get the Rainy River flowing again.
Fishing has been and continues to be phenomenal. All the fish have been pouring into the river from the big lake and catching a trophy walleye is truly at its prime. Consistent big walleye are being caught daily. One angler was happy to report a 29.5” 11# trip-topper just yesterday. A reminder for you anglers in quest for a lifetime hog walleye, its catch and release until April 14th. So as a PSA we kindly remind everyone to be gentle. Get them up, snap a couple of pictures and get them back in the water as soon as possible. Be kind and tender getting them back to their spawning activities without any injuries. We need them to continue building our great fishery.
The sturgeon catch is also rocking right now on the Rainy River. The largest we have heard about was a whopper that that was estimated over 100# and came in over 69”. River Bend Resort is running charters for sturgeon and can accommodate you from the Resort property or the Walleye Inn. Give us a call and we will get you on the bite!
If you are unable to take advantage of the early trophy season but are planning a trip this year, we recommend giving us a call as soon as possible. With the Canadian border still being closed without any certainty as to when it will be open, we are booking up fast for the walleye season opener on May 15h, and for the rest of our open water season. We still have plenty of dates open. However, we are booking daily. If you have a specific date in mind, don’t wait, book today.
