Lake of The Woods, MN Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods, MN Fishing Report August 18, 2022.

Fishing remains not short of phenomenal just as it was right out of the gate back on the season opener. It has been no secret to the many anglers that have looked past the high water that this has been and remains a banner year for fishing on Lake of The Woods, MN. One must wonder if, it’s in fact, because of the high water this year. I’m sure there is a fisheries biologist out there that can shed some light on it eventually. In the meantime, I’m grabbing my pole and a bucket of bait and will see you out on the water!

Speaking of the high water, I bet some would like to know what the current conditions are. Just like anything else, it ebbs, and it flows. We just happen to be on the “ebb” side – and folks are thankful. The water levels have significantly dropped over the past couple of weeks. The emerging docks are making it easier for anglers to access their boats without getting wet feet.

With that the walleye bite remains strong all along the southern shoreline. And yes – you heard it correctly; the jig bite continues – and yes – it’s still August. Usually jigging takes a back seat to other techniques this time of year. However that just hasn’t happened yet.

Brightly colored jig head tipped with a frozen minnow in 24 to 30 feet of water over mud has been producing nice trophies. If you want to shake it up, drift a spinner rigged with a nightcrawler in the same mud hole.

Use gold blades and make sure you have at least one bright bead that the blades can spin past. This will create a “flash” effect that is sure to entice a strike. Listen, there simply has never been a more tried and true method to getting lucky out on the lake – get yourself a spinner, using a flash or two of gold, use a bright bead or two, drop your rig into the mud, and …. BAM! SUCCESS!!

Moving into shallower water, 12 – 18 feet, there have been nice limits of eaters caught regularly. Both sides of the gap remain busy. Over sandy bottom, long lining shallow diving crankbaits has been working very well.

Moving into the Rainy River fish continue to abound and fill the baskets of many happy fishmen – men, women, and children alike are all enjoying the bounty of this great fishery. Current breaks are holding great numbers of walleye. Smallmouth are holding around structure and rocks. Big northern pike are actively feeding in the bays. Move up the river and hit the banks and structure for a full onslaught of a mixed bag including … perch, walleye, sauger, pike, crappie, smallmouth bass, and sturgeon.
