Fishing Lake of the Woods

Fishing resorts on Lake of the Woods are exceptional for all of those things for the fact they line one of the largest lakes in Minnesota that is home to a plethora of fish and an expanse of pure northern wilderness. Rugged and gorgeous, Lake of the Woods has numerous species of fish like northern pike, jumbo perch, sauger, musky, bass, crappie, sturgeon, and of course, the famous walleye!

The lake itself is roughly 760,000 acres (70 miles wide) and has an abundance of various underwater terrains that create a wide range of fishing opportunities. The Rainy River is a popular tributary on the southern side of the lake that is known for the best sturgeon fishing around. You can head out early in the morning to cruise around all day and still have plenty of lake left to explore. With so much lake available, you never have to worry about getting caught up in busy areas or rubbing elbows with your neighbors. You can fish to your heart’s content and simply enjoy the peace of the lake. If you were to describe an angler’s paradise, it would be Lake of the Woods.

MN Open Fishing and Walleye Harvest Seasonfishing resorts on lake of the woods

MN open fishing seasons vary from species to species to account for spawning and others ecosystem patterns. The easiest way to make sure you are catching the correct limits throughout the seasons is to check in with the MN DNR website.

The walleye season that we are looking forward to is happening right outside our fishing resorts on Lake of the Woods and Rainy River. Every fall, in September and October, the shiner run brings anglers from all over looking to score walleyes. Shiners are a main food source of walleye and each year, they move into the Rainy River from Lake of the Woods with an abundance of walleye chasing them in. This creates the perfect elements for nabbing walleyes and bringing in your limits just about every day. The shiner runs have been known to last into the ice-over.
