Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Anglers have enjoyed another great week of fishing Lake of The Woods. Even though we experienced one day that exceeded 70º the weather has remained steadily within the mid 40’s. Our lows have been in the 30’s. These cooler overnight temps are a sure bet the water temperatures will continue to drop. Cooler water equals even better fishing.

Along with the cooler weather and dropping water temperatures the shiners continue to make their annual run up the river to feed. We are experiencing a good run this year. Bringing with them the hungry trophy walleye. We are continuing to see large numbers of fish being caught along the southern shoreline of Lake of The Woods. As well, many anglers are experiencing a fantastic bit in the Rainy River.

Using a live fathead or shiner minnow to tip a brightly colored jig is the ticket. Anchor up along the southern shoreline from Zippel Bay over to the mouth of the Rainy. The best fishing has been reported in 17 – 28 feet of water. Follow the bait cloud and trust your electronics. If you find yourself over near the mouth of the river, please remember to anchor up to the sides and not right in the gap. That area is the navigable right-of-way, and you don’t want to get caught blocking the through traffic.

Heading into the Rainy River, take a long look at 4 Mile Bay. Very good reports of nice fish being caught. Moving farther up the river fishing has been fantastic and is getting better with each passing day. The mixed bag of fish is a homerun. In addition to walleye, you will also catch sauger, pike, small mouth, nice jumbo perch and even a few crappie.

No matter where you find them the bite will be on hard, fast, and strong. As a testament to our great fishery, you will need to sort through many smaller fish. Nevertheless, you will catch your eaters and larger slot fish along the way.

Here at River Bend Resort, we would like to remind you to not be afraid to shake it away from the crowd. Our call agents are waiting for your call and will assist you with booking your next trip to Lake of The Woods. If you are bringing your own boat, you can book your cabin online through our website and give us a call to reserve a dock space. Also, it’s not too early to be thinking about getting out for some hard water (ice fishing) fun and great fishing action. River Bend Resort has many options and packages to choose from.
