Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods, MN:

The unseasonably warm and mild weather has taken a classic fall turn. As of the writing of our weekly report the high for today is 42º. Compared to upper 60’s and 70’s holding steady over the this past week. With the cooler temps we should be seeing an upswing in an already great bite. With water temperatures hovering in 50 – 60º range this new front of cold weather will surely bring the lake and river into the magical mid to lower 50’s / upper 40’s range.
Exactly what we all have been waiting for.

Over the past week, warm weather and all, the bite and catch has been fantastic. The only complaint has been the number of smaller fish caught to the number of slot and trophy fish. Warmer weather keeping the water temperatures up combined with a mostly dry fall kept the larger fish in slightly deeper water. However, the big overlong trophies still have been chasing the shiners… just not as active.

The changing rainy and cold weather pattern will do two things. First it will increase the current in the river. And secondly, it will drop the water temperatures. Both things needed to activate the trophy walleye into a more active feeding pattern. A pattern that is historically known on this fishery as one of the best times to land a true pig.

The bite continues along the south shore of the lake with most anglers reporting success in 18 – 30 feet of water. Jigging has taken over as the go to technique, but surprisingly there are still good numbers being caught on spinner rigs and crank baits. Moving into the river, the bite has been stronger in 4 Mile Bay and also near the gap. Moving up the river in and anchoring in front of River Bend Resort has produced some nice fish as well. Of course, the mixed bag catch in the river remains strong. Landing walleye, sauger, perch, and even a few crappie has been common over the past week.

With this weather change we are positive the fishing will only get better in the river. And by better we mean larger fish with a very high probability of the ultimate trip topper trophy.
