Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Leading up to the 4th of July holiday weekend our weather was just short of bearable. Temperatures reached the high 90’s and were combined with high humidity. This brought the water temperature on Lake of The Woods up to just shy of 80º. In conditions like this, the experienced angler heads to deeper water in search of fish including trophy walleye.

Most anglers did just that and found many willing participants. The bite was strong, and limits were caught easily. The larger schools of fish were naturally found in 30’+ of water and were targeted using brightly colored jig tipped with frozen shiners or live minnows. Go to colors remained gold, pink, orange or a combination of orange and brown.

Fish were also found not so deep in and around the “gap” area. The gap is the narrow stretch of water where the Rainy River meets the lake. The bottom is sandy and thus the go to bait was a spinner harness rigged up with a nightcrawler. Drifting with a spinner rig works great in shallower 5 – 18′ of water. Along the shore line of Pine Island also produced a nice number of fish using a harness rig.

Trolling, long lining and down rigging also remained successful. Trick is to get the past down to the fish. Trust your electronics as most will be suspended. All in all, a very nice mix of fish this week including slot (19.5 – 28”), trophy walleyes over 28” and of course many limits of eaters were reported. Summertime is a great time to be able to target trophy walleye on Lake of The Woods using just about any technique.
