No matter what the time of year is, fishing will always be a staple activity on Lake of the Woods and the Rainy River. One of the best parts about being located so far north is that we tend to get an extended ice fishing season over the rest of the state. During the month of March, you can catch the tail end of spring walleye fishing before they experience a lull from April to May.

You could easily find yourself enjoying the Minnesota weather in a t-shirt while pulling a bass or northern pike through an ice hole. Spring fishing in Minnesota is an experience that will give you the best of both worlds with warmer temperatures while still scratching that ice fishing itch.

2. Zippel Bay State Park

The northern Minnesota landscapes offer incredible hiking opportunities that are sure to get any outdoor enthusiast’s heart pumping. Springtime is a great time to head out to experience places like Zippel Bay State Park. Get lost walking the trails or bring along some cross country skis and discover views of the shorelines, snowy forestry, and more. Grab a pair of binoculars and discover various species of birds chirping along the way, or simply soak up the sounds of melting ice dripping as the breeze rustles the soon awakening trees. A sunny spring day at Zippel Bay State Park is an outdoor experience that you won’t want to miss.

3. A Day in Baudette, MN

Is the weather less than favorable, and you need to figure out what to do in Minnesota in March? Don’t fret because there are plenty of indoor activities that will keep the adventures going in nearby Baudette! Discover interesting items while hitting the various stores throughout Baudette, MN, and along the border of Lake of the Woods. The Lake of the Woods Museum offers a great opportunity to learn about the history of the area while enjoying a day indoors.
