Rainy River Fishing Report

This past week here on the Rainy River taught us that Mother Nature sure does have a sadistic sense of humor. 65º and sunny one day, 32º and snowing the next. I say this is in fact, what makes a person a Minnesotan. Toughens oneself up to endure the elements so fish can still be landed just as this great fishery has intended. Towards the end of last week, we saw insane numbers of huge sturgeon being caught. To say that “some” personal bests have been made would truly be a gross understatement. The six-man Mike Olson group that stayed here at River Bend Resort wound up landing over 38 sturgeon. The largest was 66.5” with a 26” girth. 10 were 56” and larger and 5 were over 60”.

Looking into the next 10 days, the skies are looking clearer, and the weatherman is saying mild temps, little to no rain and not too breezy. This weekend will mark the sturgeon opener of the keep season (April 24, – May 07, 2021). There is quite a buzz surrounding this year’s opener due to the high numbers of large fish that have been caught since the ice melted off the river. Anglers are reporting that this very well could be an early season for the books.

We highly encourage you to give us a call and give sturgeon fishing a try. We believe catching sturgeon will actually hook you more so than the fish. And that is saying a lot in light of the high numbers being landed on a daily basis. River Bend Resort continues to offer a 35% off regular cabin rates for mid-week bookings (Sun – Thurs) now through May 13, 2021. Give one of our sales agents a call and they will be more than happy to book your next adventure.
