Mushroom Hunting in Minnesota

How many of you know your state’s official mushroom? In 1984, the Morchella esculenta, commonly known as the morel, was elected Minnesota’s official state mushroom. Today, the morel mushroom is considered a delicacy. Locals and visitors alike flock to Northern Minnesota to hunt for mushrooms. If you plan on mushroom hunting in Minnesota during your stay at River Bend’s Resort, you should know the basics of all things mushroom. Below is a beginner’s guide on mushroom hunting in Minnesota. Good luck!

How to Find Morel Mushrooms

Typical mushroom hunting in Minnesota begins in April and ends in June. Although, a true sign of the mushroom season is when dandelions and lavender begin to bloom. Peak mushroom season changes year to year, so keep your eyes peeled. The best morel mushroom hunting spots are kept a secret better than the best fishing spots. When you finally spot a morel, use a knife to slice the mushroom at soil level. You can then carry the mushrooms in an onion bag so that the spores are scattered around your new hunting ground. Hopefully, this will grow a large group of morels for your next mushroom hunting trip.

How to Cook Morel Mushrooms

Mushroom Hunting Minnesota

Now that you’ve collected several morels, you’ll want to prepare them properly. We suggest brushing off remaining debris and looking inside your mushrooms to make sure there aren’t any insects. If you plan to cook with your mushrooms soon, you’ll need to store them in a cool, dry place. Refrigerators work well as long as the morels are completely dry before storing them. If you plan to cook with mushrooms in the distant future, you should look into a food dehydrator. We have also heard of morel hunters washing the mushrooms in cold water and individually freezing them on a cookie sheet.
