Lake of The Woods, MN ice fishing report December 8, 2022. If you take extended subzero temperatures and keep accumulation snow to a minimum, what you get is the official start to the 2022 – 2023 ice fishing season up here on Lake of The Woods.
We have been setting day houses for the past couple of days and will begin taking guests tomorrow – Friday December 9th, 2022. Heated transportation, both on and off the ice, is provided during this first ice. Speaking of first ice, personally, this is my favorite time of the year. Fresh ice is as exciting to me (and many others) as Christmas morning. No doubt about it.
For starters, just getting back on the ice is exciting all by itself. Then there’s the mixed bag of fish Lake of The Woods provides during this time. Dropping that line down a fresh drilled ice hole in one of our ice houses will produce walleye, sauger, jumbo perch, northern pike, crappie, eelpout, and even the occasional ice dinosaur – sturgeon. It’s just phenomenal to think of all the fun to be had during this time of year.
We want to remind everyone to please practice safety. As excited as we all can get about getting out onto this early ice, please keep in mind that the ice conditions will vary greatly on Lake of the Woods. River Bend Resort uses well groomed trails/roads not only for your safety but ours as well. If you are heading up and fishing on your own, please get current information on the conditions and areas to avoid if there are any.
So what does everything here up north look like? We are taking guests fishing as we speak. We have our houses set up ½ mile north of Pine Island over 20 – 22 feet of clear water on 10” – 12” of ice. Fishing is kicking off with many reporting limits+ being landed.
