Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

River Bend Resort’s Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report May 18, 2023. An incredibly beautiful start to the 2023/24 walleye fishing season was report by all who participated in last weekend’s opener. Weather was perfect, wind was right, and boy oh boy did the fish bite!

Early reports (including much speculation and coffee shop talk) were that the walleye would remain stacked in the Rainy River system and not much out on the lake. Well, where that was true, it was also found out that walleye were being landed all the way out to 30 feet of water. The largest reported catches came in from 15 to 27 feet of water.

In addition to the large number of eater fish that were caught, several stories of personal best(s) (walleye over 28”) abounded over this past week. A very large number of slot fish (19.5” – 28”) were also reported as finding their way into the eagerly awaiting landing nets.

This gives support to the recent MN Fisheries report that Lake of The Woods continues to be healthy with good numbers of walleye and sauger across all class sizes. One thing is for sure, she never disappoints! Even on the worst of days.

Vertical jigging with a brightly colored jig bait tipped with a minnow (live or frozen) was the go-to technique of the season opener. Gold, orange, pink, chartreuse, brown/orange, and silver all put fish in the boat.
