Lake Of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report May 12, 2022. The anticipation for the walleye opener, which is this Saturday, May 14th, has never been greater. There’s a combination of a few things that are adding to the fever this year. The big water stayed frozen late into the spring and now warmer temperatures and rain is causing the ice to disappear. And it’s evaporating extremely fast.

If you have been keeping an eye on any social media at all, you have certainly seen the most current updates. There is plenty of open water. By Saturday there will be even more.

A few ice cubes floating around, I’m sure. Think of it as a walleye cocktail. Take the history of past springs excellent fishing, add bait as your garnish, and you got one awesome recipe for a successful Minnesota walleye season opener.

There are a lot of fish in the rivers. There will also be a lot of fish near and around the gap as well as all along the shallow waters of southern shoreline. Many sturgeon anglers have been reporting very good walleye being caught in all these areas.

My .02¢ is to start with a jig presentation. You will need a bit of a heavier jig if you are fishing the river. The Rainy is currently flowing at 60,000 cubic feet per second. That is over 29 million gallons per minute. Keeping your bait where it needs to will be the trick. However, if you move out along the southern shoreline in front of Pine Island, you will be just fine anchored up.

Pick the typical Lake of The Woods bright jig colors to start – gold, pink, orange, chartreuse. Then adjust as you see what the fish are puking up once you land them. Tip the jig with a frozen shiner or since we have had a bunch of rain, use a worm or nightcrawler. We do have frozen shiners for sale at our resort location.

We are anticipating beautiful weather and decent conditions just in time for the opener. Our Miles Lab Bar & Grill is now open 7 days a week. Stop on in for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Don’t forget to look at our newly updated cocktail menu that is surely aimed to please throughout the summer season.

We do have reservation spots available for this weekend. And looking forward into next week we have a few openings. Take advantage of our 25% off sale for mid-week booking through the month of May – give us a call and we will do the rest… One Call Gets You Away From It All!!
