Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

The news, as of first thing this morning, is that the Rainy River has opened up all the way to and past the Wheelers Point boat ramp. This puts her knocking on the door of Lake of The Woods.

It will not be long, and we will see the ice of Fourmile Bay become a memory of another ice season past. As anxious anglers are shaking off the chills of her winter grip, the northern tradition of spring trophy season is now officially once again fully underway and going strong.

By the time this report is published, the Wheelers Point boat access should be open and ready for you and your rig. Time to get wet boys and girls. Time to grab the dog and some snacks and of course your significant other – and any kids that may be in the mix, and head out to the Rainy River to rekindle the spring tradition of iced out trophy season.

Over this past week saw the running of the 2nd Annual SJR Rainy River 500 Tourney which is held by Sporting Journal Radio (SPJ 500) and hosted by none other than the River Bend Resort. Many trophy fish were landed, and many personal bests were once again topped.

This tournament is putting a spotlight back on one of our nation’s greatest and most valued natural resource – the Rainy River and the storied Lake of The Woods watershed – otherwise known as “The Walleye Capitol of The World”.

One of the ultimate aspects to this fishery is the fact that walleye are not the only inhabitants of these waters. They are also home to one of the most sought-after prehistoric sportfish known to man – sturgeon.

This time of year walleye can be caught easily by jigging with plastics or with a minnow. Bright colored jigs and larger plastics with twister tail or paddle tail this time of year are effective.

Sturgeon fishermen are dropping a wad of nightcrawlers down to the bottom and waiting for ride of their lives when one takes the bait.

The best part is, even a novice fisherman deploying a single jig technique can catch both of these species (walleye and sturgeon) as well as trophy sized jumbo perch, crappy, smallmouth bass, lake trout, northern pike and sauger.

Walleye fishing with River Bend Resort on the Rainy River just after ice out in the spring is an experience that every angler should have at least once in their lifetime. Heck, we believe the first visit could turn into your own lifelong family tradition that carries on from one generation to the next.

One of the best things about fishing with River Bend Resort is our comfortable accommodations. After a long day on the water, you can relax in a cozy cabin or enjoy a delicious meal at our on-site restaurant, Miles Lab Bar & Grill.
