Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Lake of the Woods MN Fishing Report March 30, 2023…

On the Rainy River

– Let the ceremonious spring open water fishing begin!! The Nelson Park boat ramp in Birchdale is open to all boats. The next access downstream is Frontier, and the open water is close to reaching her landing.

Koochiching County did a very nice job of clearing the accesses of snow and ice at the Nelson Park boat ramp. Hats off to a job well done! This will certainly help extend our spring season not to mention it making the accessing the river much safer and a lot less work.

Walleye fishing on the Rainy and Four Mile Bay is currently catch and release through April 14th. That also goes for 4 Mile Bay as well. Jigs tipped with frozen or live minnows is doing the trick.

Some anglers had good luck tossing plastics. Don’t count out a slow troll with some cranks. Bright colored jigs and larger plastics with twister tail or paddle tail. Best colors chartreuse, orange, pink and white.

Understanding that the fish are getting ready to spawn, please remember to handle them with care. Quickly snap a photo and release gently and quickly.

On Lake of The Woods

– Hearing that the river is finally shaking off the frozen grip of this past winter, it’s with no doubt many of the ice roads are closing all along the southern shoreline of the big lake. Just a couple remain open. The few anglers unwilling to shake off the ice addiction are being found. Mostly in search of monster pike this time of year.

Ice continues to hold nicely. And there is still some good ice fishing to be had but please remember that if you are wanting to jump on that excitement, safety is No. 1 … if in doubt – PLEASE don’t go out!

The walleye and sauger season extends through April 14 and the pike season never closes. Perch, eelpout, tullibees and crappies are also in season. Success was found with those anglers that moved around and got on fish. Some good reports off of Pine Island in shallower water.

Huge pike continue to be active with good reports this week. Setting up in 5 – 15 feet of water is the depth most anglers are targeting. Using a quick strike rig with a live sucker seem to be the go-to for catching some big pike.

We look forward to helping you enjoy this tremendous time of the year. Trophy season is here. You certainly don’t want to miss out on all the action.

We are running a spring sale on our nightly cabin rate starting right now and running until May 12th, 2023. We also provide coding at our Walleye Inn location in downtown Baudette, MN just minutes away from the boat launch and fish cleaning facilities. Don’t just sit around and watch the ice melt.
