Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods fishing report March 23, 2023. Ice Out Trophy Fishing Is Near! Warming temperatures bring the thaw of spring, fading memories of ice season past. This is the time of year that a young man’s attention turns to open water…

Things are beginning to wind down for the 2022-23 ice season, however hard water fishing is still hot on up here on Lake of The Woods. Houses are allowed on the lake until March 31, which bodes well for the diehard ice anglers that want to hang on to the final days of walking on water. Reports are that some anglers experienced a pretty good week and others reported a fair catch. Either way, fish are being caught and hard water fun is still being had.

The jigging set up and dead-stick combo continues to bring fish to the sunny side of the ice. Walleye and sauger season extends through April 14, 2023, and the northern pike season never closes. Don’t forget about the eelpout, tullibees, crappie and jumbo perch. All finding their way to the top side of the ice.

Huge pike continue to be very active. If you are targeting trophy pike, head out and set up in 5 to 15 feet of water. This is the area most anglers are finding them.

Moving to the Rainy River … The excitement of the transition from frozen to open water is also beginning to build. Anglers anticipate this time of year. Ice Out trophy fishing is the name of the game for those in the know. Your chances at landing a hog walleye are never better than during the month of April. Fresh open water and walleye that pour into the Rainy River to spawn make the perfect scenario.

There is much eagerness surrounding the Rainy River opening. Currently the spring thaw is chipping away at the ice covering the mighty water way. But to the demise of many anxious anglers, the long winter freeze has this process currently moving at a much slower pace than years past.

Toss into this equation that you will just happen to be fishing one of the best-known sturgeon fisheries in the United States and you have a phenomenal ice out walleye & sturgeon experience on your hands. Trophies and dinosaurs. No wonder we are one of the hottest destinations this time of year. The “real” spring breakers know what it’s all about.

To add to the excitement, Sporting Journal Radio is conducting their second annual SJR Rainy River 500 fishing tournament. The event will be held April 11 – 12, 2023 and will be headquartered at River Bend Resort. More information can be found at this LINK
