Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

How do you confuse a Northern Minnesota angler? You tell them the late walleye bite is on full strength then remind them that the deer opener is this weekend!

Over this past week the patterns have remained the same however the bite has jumped up a couple notches. Schools are still being found along the southern shoreline in 17 – 27 feet of water. Some of the best fishing is being found along the stretch that spans Westward from the gap of the Rainy River all the way over to Rocky Point.

Jigging technique tipped with a fathead or emerald shiner remains the standard go-to.  Live shiners in combination with a brightly colored head seem to work the best, however a few anglers are reporting frozen shiners working in certain areas.

Best part of the late walleye bite is the fact that you will also land some jumbo perch, northern pike and if the fishing gods smile upon you, a crappie or eelpout. Maybe even a sturgeon.

Following the walleye into the Rainy River, many anglers are bragging about the nice catch both in size and quantity. It stands to reason the reported forage are the emerald shiners … not really a revelation or any “news” there. Also, jigging with a frozen or live shiner is doing most of the catching. “Go figure!” … Right?!

What is interesting is the fact that we have a small contention of anglers that have not given up on trolling crankbaits in the river. Success has been very consistent. I’d have to guess giving the walleye something different to look at and chase other than an emerald shiner is the trick. Not to mention you do cover a lot more water which will increase your chances of finding scattered fish in the river.

If you are hitting the water or the woods (or both) this weekend dress warm. Nevertheless, fall fishing with River Bend Resort is the perfect season to come up and experience the Lake of The Woods open water fishery. Expect to catch trophy walleye while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the fall foliage.

Keep in mind that at this point of the season open water fishing is nearing the end. Our Fall pricing is in effect with a 10% savings on lodging. Save an additional 10% if you book your reservation online. Trophy season has never been more affordable.

With water temps now in the mid to upper 40’s ice season is just around the corner. If that excites you, or if you have always wanted to give ice fishing a try, River Bend Resort can set you up with just one call to our booking agents.

We offer a variety of ice fishing packages that suit any level of ice fishing experience and will fit any budget. You can find our offerings as well as pricing by clicking this link
