Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report October 27, 2022. As the autumn weather grows colder on Lake of The Woods and her tributaries, a fisherman’s thoughts turn to trophy walleye.

The traditional pattern of the shiner run and dropping water temperatures brings the fish to the southern shoreline and then into the Rainy River. This causes many seasoned anglers to set their sights on this wonderful fishery.

The entire southern shoreline is producing extremely well from 17 to 28 feet of water. The go-to technique remains a gold, pink, white or chartreuse colored jig tipped with a fathead or live emerald shiner.

Most anglers will anchor up where their electronics are finding schools of fish or clouds of bait. However, some are still pulling spinners rigged with a minnow or trolling crankbaits with decent success.

Targeted areas along the southern shore are Pine Island, Morris Point, Zippel Bay, and Rocky Point. Though our destination is primarily a walleye rich environment, a bonus catch will include jumbo perch and northern pike. Keep in mind that predator fish will assume the same feeding habits and thus the bonus catch.

Enjoyable fishing is also happening on the Rainy River. Same jigging technique as out on the big water is producing in the river. Some angers have switched it up by using frozen shiners with very good success.

If you are having trouble locating the pockets of fish on the river, give trolling a try. We are hearing reports from the anglers trolling that the bite has been extremely consistent. Moving about will help you identify where the fish are located if you desire to anchor and jig.

Nevertheless, fall fishing with River Bend Resort is the perfect season to come up and experience the Lake of The Woods open water fishery. Expect to catch trophy walleye while enjoying the breathtaking scenery of the fall foliage.
