Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Great walleye fishing continues to be had. Lake levels continue to drop, our docks are high and dry and we have charters are available! We are anxiously awaiting the shiner run to mark the beginning of the trophy walleye season. That being said we are currently witnessing a small run of shiners … may be the start of a very beautiful thing!

A similar fishing report to last week.  Anglers are catching walleyes using the summer long proven techniques… drifting spinners, trolling crank baits, and jigging.

When drifting with or troll spinners, target about 1.0 – 1.25 mph.  Using a 2 ounce weight with a 2 or 3 hook snelled spinner and a crawler seems to be the ticket.  Hammered gold, glow red and glow white or a combo of these have been filling up the live well.

Jigs tipped with minnows continue to put a lot of walleyes in the boat as well.  Anchor up and jig over the side or if low wind, drift and jig.  The hottest spots currently are over a mud bottom. If drifting, use a larger jig to keep you close to the bottom.  Gold, pink and glow have been good colors in the stained water.

Trolling cranks has been hot. Personally, I will long line shallow diving crank baits in shallower water. Out in front of Pine Island is by far my favorite starting point. I target 7’ – 8’ of water and slowly work my way out. I usually never make it any deeper than 12’ before I have my limit. Not only a limit of walleye, but a mixed bag catch including smallmouth bass, perch, and sauger.

Moving out from the southern shoreline, look for various schools of walleyes in the basin around 28’ – 32′. This will require getting the crank baits down closer to the bottom. And I recommend using anything that resembles a crawdad.

Moving into the Rainy River, walleye anglers are reporting some nice fish including a nice mixed bag including crappie and larger northern pike.  A good sign that the trophy season is quickly approaching. Some big sturgeon caught this week, including a monster in the mid 60 inch range.  As water temps cool, it should only get better!
