Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report August 25, 2022. The walleye bite has remained strong throughout this past week. The change in weather has brought cooler temperatures and beautiful mild days. Great fishing weather!

With the water levels continuing to drop, the fish can find forage pretty much all over the lake. This is a great time to wet a line on Lake of The Woods. However, you will need to be mobile to stay on the schools of fish. Be adaptable and give them the presentation they are seeking in different areas of the lake.

The summer pattern of drifting spinners rigged with crawlers or trolling with crankbaits is holding strong and will continue to put fish in the boat. And don’t forget, the jig bite has never turned off.

Hammered gold, glow red, chrome, blue and white are the colors that seem to entice the first bite. Moving into shallower waters will require changing it up to orange or red & white.

Across the deep mud flat areas, anglers are still producing large numbers of fish throughout the spectrum of keepers and slot fish (19.5 – 28”). The occasional trophies over 29” are being targeted in 22 – 30 feet of water over the same mud.

Reefs are great areas to target. Remember the walleye will also hang to the sides and sometimes sit just off the edge on the bottom of the reef. Hint: it has been reported that pulling a jig out of the box and tipping it with a shiner has never stopped producing this entire year around the reefs.

Moving into 17 – 22 foot of water over in the Zippel Bay and Graceton Beach area has been quite productive. Out in front of Pine Island in 25 – 29 feet is being reported as a go-to starting point for the day.

And if you dare, while out in front of Pine Island, move into 5 – 9 feet and long line troll at 2.5 – 3mph with a shallow diving crank bait that resembles a shad or perch.

You will have fun with a mixed bag catch of walleye, sauger, smallmouth bass and believe it or not, an occasional perch. Talk about a fish fry!

Moving into the Rainy River, fish continue to abound and fill the limits of many happy fishmen. Though the river is running a bit slower with the drop in water levels, current breaks are continuing to hold great numbers of walleye.

Smallmouth are holding around structure and rocks. Big northern pike are actively feeding in the bays. Move up the river and hit the banks and structure for a full onslaught of a mixed bag including … perch, walleye, sauger, pike, crappie, smallmouth bass, and sturgeon.
