Lake of The Woods MN Fishing Report August 4, 2022. The good news hailing from the beautiful northern waters of Minnesota is the water levels are receding! She has dropped a little over 3 inches just in this past week. According to the newest reports, it is expected to drop upwards of another 6 inches within the next few days.
With this great news comes the even better news that the fishing has remined phenomenal throughout this entire season – including currently.
Interestingly our historic summer patterns that shift away from the jig bite has not fully engaged yet. Limits of walleye and sauger are being brought in daily using the tried-and-true jigging method. Brightly colored heads tipped with a shiner or fathead minnow continues to be the ticket to success.
One angler gave us an inside trick to try. Along with the minnow, place a section of nightcrawler on the very tip of your hook. Especially over a mud bottom. What this setup resembles is a crawfish. Stands to reason that these hungry walleyes would attack at first sight of this rig.
Nice eater walleye are being found in 12 to 20 feet of water out in front of Pine Island. Along this southern shoreline, most are finding success pulling spinners or longlining shallow diving crankbaits.
Heading out to the deeper waters of the basin, 25 to 34 feet over mud is not only common this time of year, but extremely successful. Jigging and pulling spinners have been the most productive.
Moving into the Rainy River fish continue to abound and fill the baskets of many happy fishmen – men, women, and children alike are all enjoying the bounty of this great fishery. Current breaks are holding great numbers of walleye. Smallmouth are holding around structure and rocks. Big northern pike are actively feeding in the bays. Move up the river and hit the banks and structure for a full onslaught of a mixed bag including … perch, walleye, sauger, pike, crappie, smallmouth bass, and sturgeon.
