Lake of The Woods Ice Fishing Report

River Bend Resort Lake of The Woods Fishing Report February 17, 2022. Lake of The Woods ice fishing packages are available for any size group to fit any budget. Current midweek discounts on our advertised rates are available.

Our hardwater fishing has been good for those who fish hard. We are entering into the typical time of our ice season where, due to the oxygen levels and various other influences that Mother Nature tosses across our region, the bite will begin to slow a bit. Fish become more spread out and a little less active.

Still, great numbers of fish have been caught over this past week. A mixed bag of species continues to be put on the ice daily. And sizes spanning the spectrum from dinky to eater to slot to trophy.

Where And What

Our ice fleet is sitting on 40+” of ice over 30 feet of water with a mud bottom. We are still catching walleye, sauger, jumbo perch, crappie, pike, tullibees, eelpout, and the occasional sturgeon. Electronics have been the staple tool for the successful angler.

Knowing the depth and the reaction are the key. 90% of fish caught on Lake of The Woods will come from that magical area six inches to one foot off the bottom. The electronics have helped many anglers pinpoint larger fish that are suspended higher in the water column.

How

Continue to work the jigging rod rigged up with a gold, hammered gold, chartreuse green, pink, pink/white, silver/green jig tipped with a fathead minnow down on the bottom. Drop it into the mud to make a statement down there, then bring it up six inches to two feet off the bottom and give it some motion. Preferably the jig of choice will rattle or make noise.

In many cases, the second you pull it out of the mud you will have a fish on.  If you are noticing a finicky participant, try a quick and rapid upward sweeping jig and then let it slowly flutter back to the bottom. Shake up the presentation to entice a bite.

On your second rod setup, do nothing more than a colored hook (red) and a live minnow with a 1/8 oz weight. Drop it down to approximately 19 feet below the ice and let it sit. Pay attention to your electronics and adjust that dead stick appropriately.

Keep that minnow swimming at the depth that the larger fish are suspended. Every few minutes, go ahead and give that dead stick a little motion. That sudden movement will invite an immediate strike at times.
