Lake of The Woods Ice Fishing Report

River Bend Resort’s Lake of The Woods ice fishing report February 3, 2022. Photo Caption: River Bend’s very own Carol Cheney is pictured with a Lake of The Woods trophy she landed while on a recent outing. Carol says to watch the electronics and try different presentations.

We have moved our fleet of icehouses keeping our guest on top of the larger schools of fish. Currently we are located approximately 7.5 miles offshore in front of Pine Island hugging the Canadian border. Sitting on 36” of ice over 31 – 32 feet of water many slot fish are being landed using smaller jigs.

The technique still in play is the one-two punch of a jigging rod combined with a dead stick. Moving to smaller rip raps and rattle spoons on the jigging rod tipped with a full or part of a minnow 6” to a foot off the mud bottom is enticing the bite. Colors remain pink, red, hammered gold with a new twist of green and even an off white called “wonder bread”. Keep in mind with the stained water of Lake of The Woods, most fish are attracted by the noise. We like to say that you are “calling them in”.

On the dead stick, a colored hook with a live minnow is bringing many fish topside. Depth of the dead stick is varying depending upon the angler. Most are leaving the rig at 6” off the bottom, while others are following their electronics and setting the presentation further up on the water column where they are seeing suspended markers. Usually much larger fish are suspended. It is being reported that the use of a glow stick attached just above the hook and minnow will have the most finicky trophy walleye make a strike. As far as that goes, the smaller crappie glow lures/jigs have also continued to produce not only many fish but slot fish and the nice trip topper trophies as well.

The most successful anglers are depending on the electronics to tell them where to and how to present. Working every fish that appears on the radar has resulted in full buckets leading to full limits being brought in daily. There is still a mixed bag catch happening as well. Included in the daily catch are walleye, sauger, tullibee, and jumbo perch. The occasional white fish and eelpout are rounding out the catch.
