Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods fishing report March 17, 2022. Let’s cut to the chase! Limits of fish are being caught daily. Big pike are being landed on the bays and on the river. Trophy walleye are in the mix with the big pike. A mixed bag catch rages on out further. Fish houses will be coming off they ice soon. Plenty of time to get one last late ice trip in before ice out.

The Rainy River is still frozen all the way up past Loman, and Lake of The Woods still has forty plus inches of ice. The weather is taking an upward swing towards spring like weather through the next week so we will have to wait and see what the fate of our late ice season is.

Just on a side note – I geta chuckle out of being able to say “spring like weather” when the old thermometer doesn’t break mid 50’s. However, it is interesting how warm 38º feels this time of year.

Like I said, our ice conditions along with the state of the snowpack and toss in there freezing temps overnight and wala – it’s all good. A little sloppy at times, but still good. With the enjoyment of this extended season (fish houses are allowed out overnight until March 31st) anglers are still reporting and showing off a mixed bag catch.

Walleye, sauger, jumbo perch, huge northern pike, eelpout, tullibee and yes … crappie are all finding themselves put on the sunny side of the ice. Most of our fleet has remained seven to eight miles out in front of Pine Island in 22 – 30 feet of water, and still over mud. The colors remain gold combined with glow colors, hammered gold, wonder bread, red, white/green, and recently the crawfish color has turned back on.

Northern Pike activity is picking up and is really getting hot.  Using a tip up with a quick strike rig, with a 6” or larger live sucker has been the most successful in 3 – 18 feet.  Hunting these water-wolfs is a true sport. And “hunting” is exactly what it sounds like. The areas that hold these beauties is widespread. So, you got to be willing to be mobile and do some set ups to complete your scouting. But, when you get into them, the payoff is phenomenal. The bonus here is that it is very common for true big and heavy trophy walleye of 29” and greater to be in those same areas with the northern pike.

Moving into next week, we will be pulling a majority of the fleet off the ice. The remaining half dozen fish houses most likely will be moved closer to shore. And after March 20th we will have cabin only rentals available.

Ice fishing will continue through the month of March. All houses must be off the ice March 31, 2022. Walleye and sauger season will remain open until the 14th of April. There is plenty of great and safe ice and a bounty of fish yet to be caught. River Bend Resort can set you up easily with just one call for all your lodging needs.

In addition, we do offer online booking for those who wish to do so. Please keep in mind that if you should experience any difficulty with our online system, we are a simple phone call away from getting you set up and fishing with us on beautiful Lake of The Woods.

Until next week … Keep a Tight Line! Bugs & Fishes ≤º))~{
