Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods, MN.:

Over the past week, we have experienced exelent fishing. The bite pattern was largely affected by the unseasonably warm, dry weather. As a result, we saw a fluctuating bite pattern that included a lot of smaller fish grabbing a hold of the bait before it could reach the larger fish that were suspended between the bottom and 10 foot above the bottom. In this case, switch to using a heavier jig or change it up to a crawler harness with a heavier weight to get the bait down faster. This will land larger fish.

Fall pattern continues to grow in strength regarding the movement and staging of walleye along the southern shoreline. Most anglers are still targeting 18 – 28 feet of water. Keeping the target focused on where they are schooling of course. The water temps will begin to fall into the mid to lower 50’s and the pattern will change to a more aggressive bite as the late open water season progresses. Nevertheless, a lot of fish have been caught over this past week.

Jigging with a live minnow has been the go-to and most effective. Out deeper, anglers are still pulling crankbaits with success. Most have been anchored up just outside the gap and jigging with a fathead or shiner. Live shiners are available at all the local bait shops. Since shiners are the current forage, they are very effective.

On the Rainy River the shiners continue their run in great numbers. With the continued run of shiners is the continued number of walleye – in greater numbers – each week. The chances of landing a trophy walleye of a lifetime are outstanding this time of year.
