Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

Lake of The Woods, MN.

We’ve talked about it… We’ve reported about it… We’ve even tried to warn folks about it … It’s official folks, we have a Walleye-ageddon happening as we speak! This apocalypse of trophy fishing is being fueled in large part by the emerald shiner run that historically happens each year at this time.

As the shiners pour into the Rainy River, large schools of walleye will stage along the southern shoreline of Lake of The Woods. Just outside the gap is a favorite go to spot for many. Moving from the mouth of the river (the gap) heading west along Pine Island, look for 22 – 30 feet of water. You will certainly find the large schools of fish using your electronics. The jig bite is 100% effective with all this activity. Tip your brightly colored jig head with a frozen shiner or a live fathead minnow. Good colors to keep in your tacklebox should include gold, orange, glow white, pink, yellow and black.

Keep in mind that if the walleye and sauger are chasing and staging so will the other predator species. Smallmouth, perch, and very nice northern pike have all made their way into many a mixed bag over the past week. Though the fall jig technique is really cranking in some good numbers of fish, on days that the wind lays down switch up the game plan. It’s being reported that on calm days trolling crankbaits is still producing nicely.

Moving into and upriver, the fishing has been very good. Most anglers are jigging using the above method. Anchor up near or on a hole, along the shoreline or even near docks (structure). With a jig and minnow, you will have success and a mixed bag for sure. As most experienced anglers to our area know, amid this massive seasonal fish-nado the chase for a trophy fish is on like donkey Kong.
