Lake of The Woods Fishing Report

River Bend Resort: Baudette, Minnesota

We have had yet another exceptional week of fishing since my last post. The summer pattern has held steady and keeps producing fishing of all sizes. Lots of eaters, lots of slot fish (19.5 – 28”) and many trophies over 30”. The pattern involves only two techniques, trolling crankbaits and drifting with spinner rigs.

The walleye are scattered all across the lake right now and are being found seemingly everywhere. Flats, structure, shallow, deep, mud, sand are all holding fish. However… depth has become the key. If you are trolling crankbaits you should start by targeting 20 – 28 feet of water. I would head out into the basin of Big Travers Bay. Get the bait down into the water column so you are presenting anywhere between 4 and 6 foot off the bottom. Chose anything chrome or shad like in color, keep your speed between 2.5 and 3 mph and you will do well. Many anglers are accomplishing the depth with lead core line. 20-28 feet of water, lead core line (let out 5 colors), chrome crankbait, 2.5 – 3 mph, and start out in the southern basin. The same will work over rock structure.

Drifting spinners along the bottom in the same depths rigged with a nightcrawler is also producing extremely well. Especially over a mud bottom. Understanding that the chrome crankbaits are getting a 2-1 bite ratio right now, use silver or chrome blades on the spinner rig. If the bite slows shake up that presentation with hammered gold blades.

The Rainy River continues to produce many fish with a mixed bag. Walleye, sauger, pike, perch, crappie, bass and of course sturgeon. Spinners and jigs anyplace with structure will produce the best bite. Back water and drop-offs holding steady as well.

Until next week … don’t be afraid to shake it away from the crowd. Our call agents are waiting for your call and will assist you with booking your next trip to Lake of The Woods with River Bend Resort. If you are bringing your own boat, you can book your cabin online through our website and give us a call to reserve a dock space.

Until next week … Keep a Tight Line! Bugs & Fishes ≤º))~{
